7 Reasons Why Core Values Are Important – Coaching Question of the Week

Here is a transcript of today’s video blog coaching question of the week (Core Values):

We’re here with our Coaching Question of the Week:  If you are a business owner, have you identified the core values of your business and have you incorporated those core values into the culture of you company?

This is so important, and in a moment I’m going to give you seven reasons why it is so important.

But I’m video recording here at Gringo’s Restaurant in Stafford, TX. The reason I’m here is because this company has done a fantastic job of incorporating their core values. If you come here to eat, you’ll see on the back of their menu they have listed out their core values. But what’s even cooler about what they do is in the summer, all the servers wear t-shirts and each one has a different core value on the back.

So the first time I saw this, I thought it was so cool because each server had a different one of their core values on the back. And I talked to different serves and they knew what their core values were, they were living it out.

And so, as business owners, we need to identify and live out the core values of our company for at least 7 reasons.

  1. They determine your company distinctives. What makes you different from everyone else in your industry or in your field. What differentiates you? One way to do this is with your core values. You want to be clear about what those are.
  2. They dictate personal involvement and alignment. When you go to hire staff and employees, you want people who are in alignment with your core values. You can train them in skills. But they must be in alignment with your core values.
  3. They communicate what is important. What’s important to you, the employees, and the company.
  4. They influence overall behavior. The core values influence how the staff here at Gringos act, and you can see it. They live it out, and you want that to happen in your company.
  5. The inspire people to action. People take positive action because they aspire to live up to those core values.
  6. They contribute to the overall success of the organization.
  7. They shape the organizational culture.

I want you to think about that question: What are your core values as a company?

I want you to identify them, articulate them, and incorporate them into everything you do. That’s the foundation for building a great company. Thanks for watching.
