Great Leaders are Deep and Wide!

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” -Warren G. Bennis

Transcript of today's video blog: Great leaders are both deep and wide. It doesn't matter if you're a business leader, a social sector leader, a faith leader, or a political leader. Great leaders understand how important it is that they be both deep and wide. By deep, what I mean is they think deeply about their organization or their cause. They think deeply about what their purpose or mission is. They think deeply about themselves as leaders; about their strengths and their weaknesses. And they especially think deeply about their team. They think about the people they have around them and how this team works together to accomplish the goal of that organization. They are deep leaders. But they are also wide leaders. And by wide, I mean they are thinking about how to have maximum impact through their organization or their business. They want to have the greatest breadth and create the greatest abundance of results…whatever those results may be. To be a deep leader, you have to be reflective. Sometimes I tell my clients that the most important work of leadership is reflection. Spending time in reflective thought. I encourage my clients to spend time every day, even quarterly, to have a half-day or full day, to think deeply about their organization, about themselves, and about what they are trying to accomplish. By spending time in reflective thinking, leaders become deep leaders. To be wide, you have to be strategic. You have to think strategically about your mission or your purpose. You have to think strategically about how you're going to accomplish your goal. Great leaders plan strategically and they execute strategically. By being reflective and strategic, these leaders become both deep and wide. I want to encourage you, no matter where you lead, to be a leader who is both deep and wide. Spend time thinking.
