Lead with Focus

target, focus, leadershipNothing can add more power to your life than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets.  - Nido Qubein

A business leader is responsible for establishing both the vision and the focus of the organization. For more insight into vision see “The Essence of Leadership is Vision” and “Lead by Communicating Your Vision.” In this post I want to talk about the importance of organizational focus. You must fight to keep your people (and yourself) focused because there are too many distractions!  Just like you, they also need to be operating effectively.  You must get them doing the right things, not just doing things right.

In addition to sharing your vision, you must be skillful at developing systems and organizational structure that support this vision.  In short, you must be a business architect.  While the vision is the foundation of your business, you must be able to build the walls, roof, plumbing system, etc.  In other words, your marketing, selling, operations, and infrastructure must align with your vision. Everything must be focused.

As Leader, focus your team on the following 6 areas:
  1. Satisfying your customers/clients – Are we turning our customers into raving fans?
  2. Getting results, not making excuses – Where are our results falling short? What can we do to make a difference in this area?
  3. Continually improving – What is the next system or process that needs improvement?
  4. Maintaining profits – Are we achieving maximum profitability and does everyone benefit from that profit?
  5. Keeping a long-term perspective – What are we doing today to make our company viable in 3 to 5 years?
  6. Having fun – Is everyone enjoying their work?
Each week you could make one of these 6 focal areas the topic of your staff meeting. Do not think that team members will focus themselves, or that they will focus on the right things. Your job as a leader is to stay focused and to keep your team focused. Remember, nothing can add more power to your life and business than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets. Keep your team focused!

Excellent information Glenn. Too often the vision is forgotten and focus lost – key of any leader is to maintain the vision and communicate/engage the team and organization.

    Great note on continuous improvement.
