Powerful Marketing Strategies: Position Yourself as a Thought-Leader

thought leaderThe #1 question in the mind of a prospective customer, patient, or client is this: "Can I trust you?" Before someone buys your products or services, they usually need some degree of trust. If we wait until the selling conversation to start building trust, we have done ourselves and our prospects a disservice. Instead, I encourage my clients to position themselves as a "thought-leader."

What is a Thought Leader?

A "thought-leader" is someone who provides valuable information, new ideas, fresh perspective, or answers to ongoing questions or problems. I encourage business owners to get inside the head of their best customers and prospects so they can understand what they need to know. Once you understand the issues they wrestle with, you can begin to generate content that will help them. The goal of thought leadership in marketing is to build trust and become a valued resource to your prospects BEFORE they need your services. You position yourself as a thought-leader (an expert) so that your market looks to you for information and guidance. However, to succeed at this you must know your target market!  What do they want to know?  What do they need to know?  Where do they look for that information?  How can you become that source?

Thought Leaders Solve Problems

The content you create will be a solution to their problems. Most importantly, you share this knowledge without mentioning your company or products at all. You simply add value such that when the opportunity to sell arises, your prospects look to YOU first!  Some of the tactics that business owners are using to deliver this value-added content include:
  • Blogs
  • White Papers
  • E-books
  • E-zines
  • E-newsletters
  • Infographics
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter
  • Webinars/Seminars
  • Research & Survey Reports
  • Podcasts & YouTube Videos
  • Charts & Graphs
  • Wiki's, Forums, and Groups
Let me encourage you to make it a part of your marketing strategy to position yourself as a thought-leader. Become known for the valuable information you give to your market! Tweet This
